    A Grandmother's Advice

One of the benefits of spending the full day with a bride is that I am available when beautiful moments happen. I want to be there when moments that will only happen once in a lifetime occur.

This was a short and beautiful conversation between a grandmother and her soon to be wed grand daughter. The words they exchanged were quiet and very personal. I am so blessed to even be present for these kind of moments.

    Joe Still Business Portrait

A business portrait can be a simple headshot or it can communicate more about the man. For Joe I chose to focus on the sense of strength and character that grabs you the moment you shake hands with him. I beautiful portrait sees deeper than the skin.

Hospital Hole – Manatees, originally uploaded by mccrystalimage.

I have been diving for 12 years now. I really do love it. It is amazing and relaxing and challenging at the same time. One of the primary reasons I learned to dive was I grew up looking at National Geographic’s under water images and being completely fascinated by them.

This is one of my favorite dives, Hospital Hole on the Weeki Wachee River. It is a deep and dark cavern that opens up under the river. I have been watching it grow and change for many years now.

I love this time of year. The Gulf of Mexico is cold and the manatees come into the warmer waters of the springs. Hospital Hole is not a hot spot for party barges of divers, so there is a peaceful air about the experience. I’ve also noticed the manatees that come there are more likely to approach you than on other springs.

For this dive I chose to photograph in black and white with Tri-x. It was like old times. I learned a lot about photography shooting Tri-x in High School and College.

This scene is a manatee sleeping, resting her chin on a ledge.

I love doing portraits in locations that are important to the couple. John and Jennifer went to school together and spent many hours during their years together walking and enjoying this park together. It is a place filled with their history. John even chose to pop the question on a deck there overlooking a huge grass flat at sunset.

One of the ways I remain sharp as an artist is to do personal projects and to create art outside of the areas I work in on a regular basis. When I first started learning to be a photographer in high school I discovered that I really loved being outside in nature, walking, exploring and finding beauty. I have found it relaxing and energizing ever since.

Recently I spent the morning exploring an area of beach on Longboat Key. An hour or two of walking, listening and creating is very good for the soul.

During the week I spent this summer in the Dominican Republic I was struck by the great contrast between the beauty of the county and the poverty its people live in. It is hard to even grasp. The village of Bombita is a tiny dot on the map with little in money or resources. This little place is right on the edge of the sugar cane fields that serve as the primary employer for its inhabitants. Life in Bombita revolves around faith, the Community Partners School and this Aqueduct that feeds water to the fields. Children play, clothes are washed… everything happens here.

This week has really helped me to see just how fortunate I am. Taking my daughter with me was an amazing experience for both of us.
